For days the ships ride the current. Waves taller than the treasure ships crash near them. The ships fall into troughs deeper than themselves. Fear takes hold of the crew, and the admiral orders constant prayer services to appease Ma Tsu.

One morning on dawn watch, Zhi notices that the waves are settling. He smells a now-familiar, humid scent in the far distance: the first sign that the fleet is approaching land. He signals the rest of the crew, and the lookout sounds the cry.

Soaring yet oddly flat mountains loom on the horizon. From the ship’s distant vantage point, they seem to form a round tip surrounded by a ring of crashing white waves. Zhi guesses that they have arrived at a cape, perhaps the very tip of Africa.

The crew rejoices at the sight of land. Though the familiar seabirds circling and cawing should appease him, Zhi feels ill at ease. As if the fleet has arrived at the end of the world.
